I was not an avid fan of LCD Soundsystem's self-titled debut album, which was good, but I'm really enjoying his sophomore effort, Sound of Silver. Much more delicate and patient, Sound of Silver, takes the originality and creativity of the previous album and tightens the focus. Rather than throw a bunch of creative songs onto an album, it's obvious that James Murphy (a.k.a. LCD Soundsystem) carefully selected each track and thoughtfully laid them out in a meaningful order.
Sound of Silver feels more focused, but, like its predecessor, still fluidly mixes rock and dance music. Slowly but surely, Mr. Murphy is breaking down America's wall of ignorance towards the dance genre. On his song, "North American Scum," he makes the statement, "Oh, I don't know, I don't know / Oh, where to begin / We are North Americans / And for most of you / who still think we're from England / we're not, no." He's is proudly (or sarcastically) taking a stand and confronting American music lovers to open up and accept dance music and not just assume that it's a European thing.
I had high expectations for this album due to the glorious reviews that it was receiving and it met those expectations 110%. We proud Americans need to open our minds to the possibility to dance music and this is a great place to start. Mixed with rock 'n roll, Sound of Silver eases the listener into electronic/dance music and gives them something familiar to enjoy while allowing them to experience this unusual "European music."
