My first impression is how full it is, yet there's a lot of room to breathe. It's not like we've never heard this style of folk rock before, but Cat Power does it really, really well. Chan Marshall, her given name, put together a solid album with The Greatest. Although I haven't heard any other Cat Power albums, my reading of other reviews tells me this is easily her best effort. Returning to Memphis, where she recorded her album, What Would the Community Think, almost 10 years ago, The Greatest is an "homage to the Southern soul that she listened to as a young girl" (www.allmusic.com). And what an homage it is!

SUM IT UP: a richly sparse beauty
