For a band that is so deeply rooted and highly respected in the independent music world to polish their sound, as Modest Mouse does on their latest album, and still maintain their level of creative quality is almost unheard of in the music industry. To top it off, the band brings in legendary guitarist, Johnny Marr (minus an ego) from the Smiths, and not only keeps their signature sound, but further develops it into a mature and original sound.
Lead singer and songwriter, Isaac Brock, may have a terrible voice with limited range, but the passion that drips from his broken vocals adds to the wonderful lyrics and instrumental arrangement of each song. With some help on a few tracks from James Mercer (The Shins) the polished sound on the album is elevated to mainstream accessibility. Topping the Billboard charts at #1 their first week, Modest Mouse is following the trend of independent bands, such as The Arcade Fire and The Shins, making a splash in the mainstream music scene.
